My well-used Cuisinart electric can opener

Using a manual can opener can sometimes be hard for people, but it is especially difficult for those with wrist problems like carpal tunnel or arthritis. The twisting motion required to turn the small handle on a manual can opener can be difficult and sometimes painful. Choosing a good quality electric can opener can be just the right solution.

Cuisinart Stainless Steel Can Opener: SCO-60 Review

I have had a cheaper model electric can opener, but it didn’t last very long. I put the money in to this Cusinart because it was sturdy and I expect it will last a long time. I bought this can opener 4 years ago, and it has been working well ever since then.

  • Hands-free opening of cans. You just put the can on, push down the lever, and let it go. No need to hold on to the can or the lever. It will stop turning when it is done.
  • Easy to clean the cutting blade. The blade and handle actually slide out of the machine for easy cleaning.
  • It’s heavy. This means even large cans that you attach to the machine won’t tip it over.

  • The lid will be jagged. Be careful when removing it from the magnet.

This Cuisinart electric can opener ranges right around $45-50, depending on where you purchase it.

How It Works

Simply place your can up to the cutting mechanism. Make sure the edge of the can is just passed the edge of the blade, so that the blade is at the edge of the can (before the rim).  Push down on the lever to push the blade into the lid of the can and start the motor. No need to hold down the lever or hold on to the can. Once the lid is cut off, the motor will stop. Lift the lever to release the can. Remove the lid from the magnet and throw it away.

To clean the blade, lift the lever up and pull gently towards you. The blade and lever will come out as one solid piece to be washed.

Other Notes

I have seen a lot of really negative reviews out there about this product. I don’t know if the components have changed since I purchased mine or if other people use this appliance a lot more than I do (and are rougher on it). Lately I have been using it at least once a week. I haven’t had any problems with the functioning of the can opener and continue to use it.
