No More Trouble Opening Glass Jars or Plastic Bottles: Electric Jar Opener

Black & Decker Lids Off Electric Jar Opener

Black & Decker Lids Off Electric Jar Opener

If your wrists are weak from carpal tunnel issues, or if you experience pain from arthritis or other wrist problems, you may have trouble opening glass jars and plastic bottles.

For me, the twisting motion required to remove a lid from a glass jar is painful, sometimes excruciatingly so, and the pain doesn’t stop after you stop twisting.

However, I’m a foodie and I love to cook different types of foods. That means that sometimes I’ll have to take the lid off of a glass jar. Luckily, I stumbled across the Black and Decker Lids Off Jar Opener. It’s a great electric jar opener.

Black and Decker Lids Off Jar Opener Review

  • Opens all sorts of jars with little to no effort from you
  • Sturdily built so it lasts a long time
  • Adjustable height and width to open many different sizes of jars and bottles

  • Short electric cord, so it has to be right next to an outlet
  • Can not open very large jars or very tall ones or plastic bottles with very tiny lids

The model I purchased was relatively inexpensive, about $50. Since then, there have been multiple models put out by Black and Decker that have additional features and color options. The prices for these range from $50 – $120.

How It Works

To release the adjustable top, push the small black “lever” button on the top of the machine, then gently pull up. Place your jar or bottle inside on the tray. Then push the small black button again to place the top of the machine on the lid of your jar. Push the large silver button to start the bottle opening. The base will automatically adjust to the width of your jar, grip the base and twist.  You’ll hear a popping sound as your glass jar opens.  Then you will need to hit the release button one more time to lift the top of the machine off of your jar. Remove the jar.

This jar and bottle opener can open cans and bottles that are up to 4 inches wide and 8 inches tall.

Opening a bottle of Gatorade

Gatorade bottles are one of the hardest things for me to open by myself. This electric bottle opener takes care of it for me with ease.

With the machine completely compacted, it is about 10 inches in height (including the handle at the top). It is about 8.5 in diameter and weighs only a couple of pounds.

Other Notes

While we have a lot of countertop space, we also have several appliances, a wine rack, and knife holders that take up some of that space. This device does take up a decent amount of space on the counter, so keep it in cupboard until you need it. It doesn’t weight much so picking it up is not a problem. Just remember to carry it by the base so that the adjustable top doesn’t fly up.

I have had this appliance for over 5 years. While I don’t use it a lot, it is very handy to have when I need it. Black and Decker is known for its durability,  and this appliance lives up to that expectation.

  1. Thanks so much for the excellent review on Black and Decker Lids Off Jar Opener! Based on your experience, I was wondering whether this would be suitable for opening a regular 400ml or 600ml bottle of water? I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and am looking for an electric or automated device for opening these.

    • Kat,
The smaller the top, the less room the machine has to grip on. I have been able to open a 20 oz bottle of gatorade with it, but I am afraid it would have trouble with any lids that are smaller than that. It also has a maximum height issue. The gatorade bottle barely fit in there – so anything taller than that (which I suspect a 600 ml bottle of water would be) would not work.
